In the first year, you will study a variety of topics which will develop your understanding of different aspects of English: how spoken language differs from written language; how different accents and dialects shape the way we think about people; how men and women use language differently and for different purposes; and how our occupations shape the way we use English. You will learn these areas through the application of key concepts such as: lexis, grammar, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse. In the second year, you will develop the skills learned within the first year. You will apply the key concepts to texts in greater detail, looking at how children learn language and how the English Language itself has developed over time. The coursework element provides greater room for independent study relating to each candidate’s chosen area of study. What it can lead to Careers including writing, journalism, teaching, advertising and marketing, PR, law and research.
