Economics is an exciting and dynamic social science which examines how individuals, governments and societies make choices given scarce resources. It is used to analyse a host of global and topical problems. Economics is best thought of, as one economist joked, as ‘What Economists Do’. What will you learn? You will follow the AQA specification. In year 12 you study two units. In ‘Markets and Market Failure’ you will study the economic problem and how resources are allocated in competitive markets, analysing what happens when markets fail and how governments intervene within a failing market. In ‘The National Economy’ you will study topics such as measuring macroeconomic performance, how a macro economy works, how to judge economic performance and how that influences macroeconomic policy. Throughout this year you will develop your analytical, persuasive and evaluative writing skills. In year 13 you study a further two units. In ‘Business Economics and Distribution of Income’, you will learn how firms set objectives, costs and revenues; looking at competitive markets and marketing strategies. You then move onto concentrated markets and the labour market, and finally how governments can intervene in these more complex markets. In ‘The National and International Economy’ you will develop your macroeconomic knowledge from year 12 to include macroeconomic indicators, how we manage the national economy and then place it in context of the international economies.
