Course summary

What will students study in BTEC Musical Theatre? The Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) includes three mandatory units that students must complete as part of their studies. These units are designed to provide a core foundation of skills and knowledge in the performing arts, with a focus on musical theatre. Unit 1: Investigating Practitioners’ Work In this unit, students will study the work of influential performing arts practitioners, such as directors, choreographers, playwrights, and performers, with a focus on how they have contributed to musical theatre. Students will critically examine the practitioners’ creative processes, the contexts of their work, and the impact they have had on the performing arts industry. Unit 2: Developing Skills and Techniques for Live Performance This unit focuses on building the practical performance skills needed for musical theatre. Students will receive training in acting, singing, and dance, with the goal of developing their technical abilities and performance techniques. Unit 3: Group Performance Workshop In this unit, students will engage in collaborative performance work, where they will work together to devise, rehearse, and perform a musical theatre piece as part of a group. The focus is on developing teamwork and ensemble skills, as well as contributing creatively to the final performance. Students will also study one optional unit, which will be chosen in support of the students on the course. These can range from; Classical Ballet Technique, Tap Dance Technique, Jazz Dance Technique, Contemporary Dance Technique, Acting Styles, Developing Voice for Performance, Musical Theatre Performance. Students will be taught by Dance, Drama and Music specialists. What do we expect of BTEC Performing Arts students? To succeed, students must commit to high standards of work, discipline, and personal responsibility both in and outside of lessons. We expect students to adopt a professional attitude similar to what is expected in the performing arts industry. Students are also expected to rehearse independently, working on lines, songs, or choreography to ensure they are well-prepared for performances. Students should also be studying singing outside of lessons this could be through individual singing lessons in school or through outsides organisations such as Stagecoach. What are the major assessments this year? Throughout the academic year, students will undergo a series of assessments. These assessments are a mix of practical performances, written coursework, and reflective evaluations, allowing students to demonstrate their abilities in acting, singing, and dancing, as well as their understanding of the industry. What do assessments test? The assessments will test students’ knowledge, understanding and application of the key concepts of each unit. Whom should I contact for further advice or information?
