Course summary

If you are interested in current affairs and the news, understanding human behaviour and debating topical issues than this course is for you! You will learn the basic language of Sociology and how to apply this in everyday life. You will explore issues of gender, ethnicity and class in education and assess how recent policies have been formed, focusing on education. You will find out how sociologists conduct their research and how research is used to enhance our understanding of society. You will discover the changing nature of families and households in Britain, how this impacts on society at large, assessing the expected roles of men and women within the family and the impact key changes within society have had on family life. In your second year of the course you will look are the changing nature of ‘religion’ and the extent to which it remains an important part of people’s lives and its role in society in the 21st Century, the relationship between demographics in people’s religious beliefs and practices. You will also assess the ways crime and deviance is socially constructed, reactions to and explanations of crime, government initiatives to reduce crime and issues such as whether sociology can and should be seen as a science and the relationship between sociology and social policy.
