Language and the individual The aim of this part of the course is to introduce students to language study, exploring textual variety. It introduces students to methods of language analysis and to explore concepts of audience, purpose, genre, mode and representation. Language varieties This part of the course allows students to explore language variety. Students will explore the use of language in the wider social and geographical contexts, particularly in the context of the British Isles. A focus of the course will be attitudes towards language and current debates surrounding issues of language diversity. Developing Language - language acquisition The nature and functions of language acquisition and social development of children from 0 to 11 years; language change - historical and contemporary changes in the English Language from Late Modern English (1700+) to the present day. Investigating Language This is coursework exploring and analysing language data; data collection methodology; analysis and interpretation of data using appropriate linguistic methods and techniques; evaluation and investigative conclusions.
