Sociology
Course summary
Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions. Sociology’s subject matter is diverse, ranging from crime to religion, from the family to the state, from the divisions of race and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, and from social stability to radical change in whole societies. Sociology is for you if you want to explore and understand society. Why do some people do well at school and others don’t? Why do some people have children and others don’t? Why do some people join cults and others don’t? Why do some people commit crimes and others don’t? Also if you enjoy debating and evaluating social theory and indicating strengths and weaknesses the course gives a lot of weight to those skills. Sociology can make the world around you “come alive” and every day there will be examples for you to consider. During the course you will study the following topics over two years: • Education and Methods in Context • Research Methods and Families and Households • Education with Theory and Methods • Families, Households and Beliefs within Society • Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods
