
Media Studies is a fast-moving academic subject that allows students to evaluate and analyse a variety of media products, and develop practical skills spanning a range of platforms. You will study contemporary, diverse topics with varied and engaging content. You will develop your research skills through coursework and case studies, as well as hone your debating skills through the discussion of current issues from a range of perspectives. The course engages you in the in depth study of products in relation to the four areas of the theoretical framework (language, representation, industries and audiences). You will also develop, through practical analysis and creation of media products, an appreciation for the social, cultural and historical contexts of media productions. You will investigate the media in order to reach an understanding of how meanings and responses are created.
Grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language and Literature.
Paper 1 - Questions will focus on issues and debates in the contemporary media landscape within the following media areas: Film, Newspapers, Advertising and Marketing, Music Video and Radio 35% of A-level Paper 2 - Questions will focus on the analysis of media products linked to Close Study topics from the following media areas: Television, Online, Social and Participatory Media, Video Games and Magazines. 35% of A-level Non Examined Assessment - You will create a series of linked cross-media products related to a choice of themes provided by the exam board (for example, television promotion, music video, website design and video games). 30% of A-level
