This course is an engaging introduction to Psychology. On this course, you will develop critical analysis and independent thinking skills. This is a linear qualification. You will need to complete all exams in May/June in a single year. 20-30% of the course will be research methods and 10% will be Maths. Topics studied: Paper 1 Social influence: Types of conformity and the role of social influence Memory: Models of memory and factors affecting eye witness testimony Attachment: Explanations of caregiver- infant interactions in humans Psychopathology: Abnormality and explanations of phobias and depression Paper 2 You will understand the psychological theories, concepts, research methods, and ethical issues. In this paper you must demonstrate an understanding of practical research skills and mathematical skills. Approaches in Psychology: Origins of Psychology and approaches: Learning approach, cognitive approach, biological approach, biological approach, psychodynamic approach and humanistic approach. Biopsychology: The nervous system and ways of studying the brain. The body’s response to stress and Biological rhythms. Research Methods: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research methods, scientific processes and techniques of data handling and analysis. Students will be familiar with statistical testing and know when to use such tests. Paper 3 Issues and Debates in Psychology: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of psychological concepts, theories, research studies, research methods and ethical issues. One compulsory section and questions from the following options: Gender: Sex and gender stereotypes; Explanations of gender development. Schizophrenia: Classification of schizophrenia; Therapies and treating schizophrenia. Forensic Psychology: Definitions of crime; Offender profiling; Explanations of offending behaviour and dealing with offenders.
