This course will teach students how to analyse everyday written and spoken language in detail, using the linguistic methods: Lexis & Semantics, Discourse Structure, Grammar & Syntax, Graphology, Phonology and Pragmatics. Students will learn about the ways in which language varies across regions, occupations and other social groups. They will also develop their own skills as writers, producing non-fiction articles. In the first term of the course, students will start with an introduction to the linguistic methods and learn much of the metalanguage of the subject. They will also learn about how the English language has changed over time.
Grade 6 in GCSE English Language
The course is assessed in two 150-minute exams and one coursework module. In the first exam, students will be asked to analyse and compare two texts before writing about children’s language development; in the second, they will write about language diversity and language change. The coursework module is comprised of a 2,000 word language investigation and a piece of original writing, accompanied by a commentary.
