The Cambridge OCR Advanced National in Applied Science is equivalent to one A-Level and is designed for students who want to continue their study of Biology, Chemistry and Physics in a practical and applied way. This qualification places strong emphasis on hands-on investigation, with students developing both subject knowledge and the laboratory skills needed in science-based industries and higher education. Assessment is a balance of externally examined units and non-examined practical assignments (NEA), giving students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding in different ways. The content is split into five units for the Extended Certificate: 1. F180: Fundamentals of Science – key concepts across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, including core practicals. 2. F181: Science in Society – how science works in the modern world, including data handling and communication. 3. F182: Investigating Science – planning and carrying out a full scientific investigation. 4. Optional Unit 1 – e.g. Analytical Techniques in Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Forensic Biology or Medical Physics. 5. Optional Unit 2 – chosen from the same range of specialist applied science units. Students who take Applied Science at BurntwoodSixth Formgo on to successfully enter Universities to study, Nursing, Radiography, Sports Science, Pharmacy and Biomedical, The Science Cluster is very well resourced and students are provided with access to approved textbooks, supplied with all practical equipment and any other resources needed.
