The A Level course lasts two years (YR12 and YR13). The course builds on some of the topics studied at GCSE and introduces others, further developing speaking, listening, reading, writing and translating skills. Topics studied in Year 12 include the changes in family structures, the world of work and tourism in Spain, and music, media, festivals and traditions in the Spanish speaking world. You will also study a film, ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ directed by Guillermo Del Toro. In year 13 you will study the impact of immigration in Spain, and historical topics including the Civil War, dictatorship and transition to democracy in Spain in the 20th century. You will also study a play, ‘La casa de Bernarda Alba’ by Federico García Lorca. The emphasis is on communicating confidently and accurately in the foreign language and the use of contemporary authentic materials including the internet. Various resources will be suggested by your teacher. You will be assessed on your oral skills, in a discussion on a familiar topic based on a stimulus containing two different statements and an independent research presentation followed by an examiner-led discussion on this topic (30%), on your listening, reading and translation skills (40%) and on your written response to works and translation (30%).
