This is a one year course that may be studied in either Y12 or Y13. Core Maths is a Level-3 course designed to prepare students for the mathematical demands of work, study and life and, as such, is ideal for many of our students at the UTC. The course has been developed with employers, universities and professional bodies as a valuable preparation for higher education and employment. This course, while still demanding, is less formal (i.e. less algebraic) and more accessible than A-Level Mathematics and is aimed at students with grades 4-6 at GCSE. What you study is not purely theoretical or abstract; it can be applied on a day-to-day basis in work, study or life and will include a financial maths element. It will also support other Level-3 subjects, such as Science & Engineering.
For the above courses at least a Grade 4 in Mathematics is required at GCSE. Students must select a Technical Specialism Subject alongside this course.
The course is taught as a one year course, to be assessed by 2 examinations in the summer of Y12. Students who are successful on the course in Y12 will be given the opportunity to take AS-Mathematics in Year 13. We believe this creates a more suitable route to AS-Maths for students coming in with GCSE Grades of 5 or 6. Students are assessed throughout the course using internal assessments.
