There are four elements to the A-level Latin course; Unseen Translation, Comprehension or Prose Composition, Verse Literature and Prose Literature. Over the two years of the course, you will build on your knowledge of vocabulary and linguistic structures, translating Latin prose and verse. You will also study a range of literary texts by Ancient Rome’s greatest authors and poets including Cicero, Tacitus, Virgil and Ovid thereby becoming immersed in history and culture of the Roman world. You will develop your skills of analysis, evaluation and interpretation by examining the ideas and attitudes of ancient cultures which still influence the way we live today. Numbers permitting, it may be possible to study Classical Greek A-level which has the same course structure as the Latin A-level. The verse and prose authors for Classical Greek A-level include Homer, Sophocles, Xenophon, and Thucydides. As part of your studies, you will have the opportunity to participate in trips to museums and significant archaeological sites both at home and abroad. Classicists go on to study a variety of subjects at university although many choose Classics or Ancient History. Classics graduates are highly regarded by employers and pursue careers in many fields including Law, Business, Politics, Teaching, Journalism and Public Relations.
