Course summary

Sociology involves understanding and thinking critically about the social worlds we live in. In particular it covers issues of power, justice and equality. We will cover a range of contemporary topics many of which are at the heart of national debates. Other skills developed The ability to construct a reasoned argument; good analytical and evaluative skills; good debating skills; including the use of evidence to support arguments and an ability to present a counter-argument. Around 40 British universities have Sociology departments and many more teach Sociology courses. Students go on to study Sociology at a range of universities including some Russell Group Universities such as Sussex, Edinburgh and Manchester. Career value There are a variety of occupations which a Sociology student might pursue: Teaching; social work; civil service and local government service; charity sector; graduate jobs in management; journalism; media. No matter what the topic, everyone has a different opinion. You learn to back your ideas up with theorists and actual sociological evidence.”
