Course summary

A Level Drama and Theatre is an inspiring, challenging and creative course for students who are passionate about performance, design, directing or theatre analysis. It combines the practical and the academic, encouraging you to explore how theatre can communicate powerful ideas, emotions and stories. Through devising, performing, directing and analysing live performance, you’ll develop as an artist, a thinker and a collaborator. The course builds confidence, creativity and independence, preparing you for a wide range of higher education and career pathways. You’ll work practically with the theories of influential theatre practitioners, explore diverse play texts, and experience live professional theatre, learning to appreciate both the artistry and the discipline that make powerful performance possible. Course Content You’ll study three main components throughout the course: Component 1 – Devising (40%) Working in groups, you will create your own original performance inspired by a key extract from a published play and the techniques of a chosen practitioner (such as Brecht, Artaud or Frantic Assembly). You will also complete a written devising portfolio that documents your process and evaluates your creative choices. Component 2 – Text in Performance (20%) You will perform a monologue or duologue and a group piece from two contrasting published plays, demonstrating your understanding of characterisation, style and audience impact. Students may also choose to be assessed as designers (lighting, sound, set or costume). Component 3 – Theatre Makers in Practice (40%) In this written examination, you will explore two set texts from the perspectives of performer, director and designer, showing how you would realise them in performance. You will also analyse and evaluate a live theatre production, applying your knowledge of theatrical style and audience response. A Level Drama and Theatre is highly regarded by universities and employers alike for the breadth of transferable skills it develops: creativity, critical thinking, empathy, collaboration and communication. Students often progress to: • University degrees in Drama, Theatre Studies, English, Film, or Performing Arts • Specialist drama schools • Creative industries including theatre production, film, television, media and arts management • Careers in law, teaching, psychology, journalism, marketing and public relations Whether you aspire to a future on stage, behind the scenes, or in a creative or people-focused profession, A Level Drama and Theatre offers an exceptional foundation in both artistic and academic excellence.
