We aim to develop well rounded musicians with a balance of skills in the main aspects of music: performing, composing, harmony, analysing and listening skills. We study the AQA syllabus which we feel offers a good balance of practical and academic study of music at A level. Students will be expected to: • perform at a Grade 6 level at AS level, and a Grade 7 level at A level • learn and apply elements of composition, including: o melody writing and the development of musical ideas o harmonising a melody o constructing chord sequences o arranging for voices, instruments and ensembles o responding to a set brief o writing a programme note for a composition • learn how to analyse music, both from listening and from a score. Our A level students contribute heavily to school life, including through participation in and leading extra-curricular ensembles, and by performing at events through the year.
Criteria 6 in GCSE Music plus audition, passed interview and test.
Auditions – these will be held using video footage. You should prepare a piece of at least Grade 5 standard to perform on your chosen instrument or voice; the video of your performance should be a minimum of two minutes in length. Your prepared video should be sent for the attention of: Ms C Troth, to ctroth@townleygrammar.org.uk Your email should clearly state your name, and include a short personal statement summarising your musical experience to date. This should include any grade examinations you may have taken, any ensembles you take part in and your level of music theory knowledge.
