Course summary

This course is a natural continuation of Music in Key Stage 4. It is appropriate for people who have studied music at GCSE or BTEC Level 2, as well as people who are competent performers on either voice or an instrument. It is an exciting course that allows students to study the types of music they are interested in, developing their skills and offering routes into the world of the music industry. This qualification is equivalent to an A Level and is accepted by universities as the equivalent in terms of entry requirements. Students from Year 12 and Year 13 are taught in the same class, You will study four units, two in Year 12 and two in Year 13: 1. Practical Music Theory & Harmony A - Examine the signs and symbols used in musical notation B - Explore the application of melodic composition based on musical elements C - Explore the application of chords and cadences for composition or arrangement D - Produce correct musical notation for performance. 2. Professional Practice in the Music Industry A - Understand the importance of professional practice in the music industry B - Understand operational requirements relevant to specific music industry organisations and practices C - Demonstrate the ability to apply the skills required for working in the music industry D - Demonstrate the requirements for professional presentation of ideas E - Evaluate the skills and knowledge needed for professional roles in the music industry 3. Ensemble Music Performance A - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the skills needed for rehearsals and ensemble performance B - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how to interpret an original musical piece C - Apply skills and techniques when contributing to an ensemble during rehearsal and performance D - Be able to contribute towards a performance as part of an ensemble E - Be able to reflect and make connections between responding, planning, rehearsal and performance 4. Solo Performance A - Explore the skills required for a solo performance B - Develop skills for a solo performance C - Carry out a solo performance. This qualification is essential for anyone considering a music course in Higher Education and is also an excellent addition for students looking to select a well-rounded choice of subjects. It allows students to follow a music/arts degree; leading to careers in music therapy, arts administration, performance and arts teaching.

Entry requirements

Minimum five GCSE passes (grades 4 or 5) including English Language and Maths. Students must also meet subject specific minimum entry requirements (shown below).

How you'll be assessed

Two units are externally assessed: (Ensemble Performance and Professional Practice in the Music Industry) Two units are internally assessed (Solo Performance and Practical Music Theory & Harmony).
