Course summary

The History course at A-Level provides students with the opportunity to understand how the past has shaped our present. It allows students to develop critical thinking skills and focuses on the themes of revolution, social change and civil rights. Course content • Britain: Conflict, Revolution and Settlement (1625-1701) - In Year 12, you will study the Stuart monarchy and their inability to secure political stability. You will also evaluate the strength of the Anglican Church, developments in social hierarchy and social thought and the changing nature of the British Economy. The unit will conclude by evaluating historical interpretations of the Glorious Revolution. Russia in Revolution (1894-1924) – In Year 12, you will study the demise of the Tsars, examining: the nature of Tsarism and the opposition towards this; the end of Romanov rule; the nature of the Provisional Government and its opponents; and the Bolshevik Revolution. • Civil Rights and Race Relations in the USA (1850-2009) – In Year 13, you will study the development of race relations in the USA from the emancipation of black Americans in 1865 through to the presidential campaign of Barack Obama. Students will also engage with the representation of race in literature, TV and film and the changing geography of race relations. • Coursework – In Year 13, students will complete an independent piece of coursework which is 4000 words long. Students are expected to compare and evaluate historical views on a chosen enquiry.
