Course summary

The A Level Mathematics is a linear course with three papers. Two thirds of the content will be on Pure Core units which provide the techniques in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus that form the fundamental building blocks of the subject. Mathematical applications make up the remaining third of the qualification, where students will focus on mechanics and statistics. Mechanics is the study of forces, energy and motion and statistics has a focus on probability, data handling and testing hypotheses. Students will require the ability to apply themselves steadily throughout the course: there is consistent demand to build up hierarchical concepts almost daily. Students should have the desire to make sense of mathematical text, and build new concepts rather than just reproducing algorithms. They are expected to present solutions clearly and concisely, and to extend their own thinking within a logical framework.
