Course summary

The course provides a comprehensive grounding in politics and political science debates through an examination of UK and Global politics and political ideologies. Most students at A Level haven’t studied Politics before and this course will suit those interested in world affairs, critical thinking and global solutions. A Level Politics gives you the transferable skills and tools to engage with the community via social and environmental action projects, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, oracy needed for undergraduate study. Our course is focused on the current developments in the UK system of democracy, political participation, voter behaviour, the role of the media, rights and civil liberties, the workings of government and parliament. We study the core political ideologies of Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism with a depth study on Nationalism. In Year 13, we focus on comparative global politics and international relations theories, global economic, political governance, the role of the UN, concepts of power, human rights and the environment, sovereignty and globalisation, EU and regionalism. Highlights Co-curricular enrichment: visiting speakers, competitions and student-led societies e.g. Model United Nations, Femsoc, European Youth Parliament. Take part in Pate’s political events e.g. Mock elections, Parliament Week every November; run your own project and inspire younger students. Optional trips e.g. Parliament and London’s Supreme Court; Berlin.
