Why Chemistry Students will develop an understanding of the properties and reactions of substances. You will apply your understanding to challenging new situations through a range of problem- solving activities. Practical work is an essential aspect of the course. Course content Physical chemistry – Including Atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, chemical equilibria and Le Chatelier’s principle, oxidation, reduction and redox equations, thermodynamics, acids and bases. Inorganic chemistry – Periodicity, the alkaline earth metals, the halogens, Period 3 elements and their oxides, transition metals, ions in aqueous solution. Organic chemistry – Including Alkanes, alcohols, organic analysis, optical isomerism, carboxylic acids, aromatic chemistry, polymers, amino acids, proteins and DNA, organic synthesis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and chromatography.
