Course summary

The A-level Physics course is linear, with all exams taken at the end of two years. At least 15% of the marks come from practical work. What will I study? In Year 12, topics include Particle Physics, Waves, Mechanics, and Electricity. Year 13 covers Thermal Physics, Gravitational, Electric and Magnetic Fields, and Nuclear Physics. WHGS offers Astrophysics as the optional topic in the second year. Practical skills, including safe use of ionising radiation, are integral throughout. Who takes this course? Physics appeals to those curious about the fundamental nature of the universe, from the smallest particles to the vast cosmos. Strong GCSE and A-Level maths skills are essential; studying A-Level Maths alongside Physics is highly recommended. Where will success take me? Physics is a facilitating subject for many university degrees and opens doors to careers in engineering (mechanical, aerospace, chemical, electrical), architecture, software design, medical physics, radiology, scientific research, as well as respected fields like law and finance. It keeps your future options wide open.
