Course summary

This qualification is designed to be taken alongside Level 3 A Level and Vocational courses, with a strong focus on the practical application of skills and knowledge. Topics studied include the three fundamental pillars of sustainability: environmental, economic and social. You will learn about the practices organisations are adopting to become more sustainable, and the technologies that are being used. You will also learn research methodologies and how to analyse data and draw conclusions. You will use this knowledge and understanding to investigate a real organisation’s practices and recommend how they can become more sustainable. Input from stakeholders such as the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and leading universities Cardiff, York, Bournemouth and Edge Hill ensures this qualification covers the fundamental aspects of sustainability and encourages you to find positive solutions to pressing sustainability challenges faced by governments, organisations and individuals. Sustainability and climate change are important to think about, along with helping young people deal with eco-anxiety, showing them positive ways to handle these big challenges. The current curriculum might not be green enough now, but we can help make it greener in a way that’s easy to manage. TOPICS STUDIED Fundamentals of Sustainability • Explore the impact we have on the climate and approaches that can be used to manage environmental impact; • Learn about the sustainability of different economic models and the economic sustainability dilemma; • Learn about key principles of social sustainability and how sustainable behaviours can be encouraged; • Learn how organisations can communicate their sustainable practices and how green credentials can be exaggerated through ‘greenwashing’.
