Course summary

If you enjoy debate, argument and thinking about the big issues then this is the course for you. This course takes a philosophical approach to Religious Studies, helping you to develop critical and analytical skills. There is no need for you to have a religious belief in order to succeed in this course. Ethics and Philosophy: Through Ethics you will study some of the classic approaches to moral decision making and key moral principles. This will include the ethical theories of Utilitarianism, Virtue Ethics and deontological approaches such as those proposed by Kant, in addition to core Christian approaches to ethics. The meaning of conscience is studied, analysed and evaluated as a means of choosing the right thing to do, and the course also looks at free-will, its definitions, and whether it is real or an illusion. Moreover, you will have opportunity to evaluate the importance of responsibility. You will apply learning to issues relating to human and nonhuman life, such as cloning and blood sports. In terms of Philosophy you will explore arguments for the existence of God, the topic of miracles, evil, and the nature of the self, as well as linguistic philosophy and its take on religious language and assertions. Religion: This element of the course explores key Christian beliefs and practices in detail, and includes the study of areas such as: wisdom and authority, gender, secularisation, and science and religion, amongst others. You will consider the nature of human existence from a Christian perspective and questions relating to life and death. Ultimately, you will be expected to be familiar with the relationship between philosophy, ethics and Christianity and a range of perspectives about these relationships. All of these areas will be considered from personal, religious, secular and philosophical points of view. You will also be expected to make links between different aspects of the A Level. Throughout the course you will use a range of learning styles, and you will learn how to approach writing philosophical responses. You will learn how to construct effective arguments, write coherent essays and make full use of examples.
