Further Mathematics
Westcliff High School for Girls

Course summary
The A Level Further Mathematics course consists of compulsory Core Pure Mathematics modules and two additional units: Further Pure Mathematics and Further Mechanics. In Core Pure Mathematics, students explore advanced mathematical ideas such as complex numbers, limits, matrices, and alternative coordinate systems beyond Cartesian geometry. The course also delves deeper into series, vectors, proof, and calculus. These topics allow students to model real-world scenarios using algebra, geometry, and calculus. A solid foundation in A Level Mathematics is essential, as this module builds on and extends those techniques. Further Pure Mathematics deepens theoretical understanding through the study of conic sections, including hyperbolas, parabolas, and ellipses. Students also investigate more advanced calculus, series, vectors, inequalities, and numerical methods. This module equips learners with powerful tools to solve a wider variety of mathematical problems and enhances their analytical thinking. Further Mechanics focuses on the mathematics of motion and forces. Students examine the effects of forces, momentum, energy, and elasticity, and learn how to model collisions—including oblique impacts—while considering how objects restore their shape and transfer energy. This module helps students apply mathematical models to real-world physics problems and understand the principles behind physical interactions.
