Further Mathematics is a demanding but rewarding course that runs alongside A Level Mathematics. In addition to the standard timetable for Mathematics, there are extra lessons every fortnight. The pace of work is markedly faster, and with less teaching time per module, the course suits students who quickly grasp new concepts and are willing to commit to sustained independent study. Two thirds of the course is devoted to Core or Pure Mathematics, while the remaining third focuses on options such as Mechanics, Statistics or Decision Mathematics. Assessment is entirely by examination at the end of the course. Further Mathematics is particularly valuable preparation for highly competitive degree courses. It is strongly recommended for those intending to study Mathematics, Physics, Physical Natural Sciences, all types of Engineering, Economics, Finance and Computer Science at the most competitive universities, where it is often expected or required. It is also excellent preparation for courses with a high mathematical content, such as PPE, Chemistry, or Biological Natural Sciences.
Grade 9 in GCSE Mathematics
