A Level Government and Politics
John Henry Newman Catholic College

Course summary
The student fees scandal, the introduction of minimum and living wages for 18-year-olds, and the decision not to lower the voting age are just three pieces of legislation or policy decision that have directly affected you in recent months. Government and Politics offers an insight into who has the power to change our lives, why, and how. At AS Level, you will develop a broad knowledge and understanding of the political system of the UK. This will be followed by further specialisation at A2, through a number of optional units. These units do not follow prescribed routes and offer flexibility to select the areas of study which are of greatest interest. Also at AS, the specification concentrates on People, Politics and Participation, as well as Governing Modern Britain, retaining much of the content from the previous specification. At A2, the specification retains the popular options from the previous specification, including US Politics and US Government and Ideologies. New options have also been introduced, including Political Issues: Ideologies in Action, providing further choice for you.
