Course summary

IB Psychology is the systematic study of behaviour and mental processes. Psychology has a variety of research designs and applications, and provides a unique approach to understanding modern society. Taking IB Psychology will enable students to access a rich source of information about factors that influence human behaviour; develop their understanding of people in general and themselves in particular; and acquire effective work habits to regulate their own learning. This course assesses your understanding of human behaviour through various psychological approaches and research methods. Biological Approach You’ll explore the fascinating relationship between the brain and behaviour, looking at how brain structures and functions influence our actions. We’ll also delve into the impact of hormones and pheromones on behaviour, and examine the intricate link between genetics and behaviour. Finally, you’ll evaluate the role of animal research in helping us understand human behaviour. Cognitive Approach This section focuses on cognitive processing, including how we think, perceive, and remember. You’ll investigate the reliability of cognitive processes (e.g., how accurate our memories are), the interplay between emotion and cognition, and how cognitive processing is evolving in our technological, modern world. Sociocultural Approach Here, we’ll examine the individual and the group, exploring how social contexts shape us. You’ll learn about the cultural origins of behaviour and cognition, how cultural influences affect individual behaviour, and the impact of globalisation on individual behaviour around the world. Approaches to Research A cornerstone of psychology is its evidence- based nature. You’ll gain crucial skills in understanding and critically evaluating different research approaches, both qualitative and quantitative. This includes questioning assumptions, identifying advantages and limitations of various methods, and assessing how research contributes to our understanding of human behaviour.
