‘Politics is too serious a matter to be left to the politicians.' Charles de Gaulle. Studying Politics makes us understand our modern world. It is important as citizens of our society that we need to understand political beliefs and become lifelong participators in the British democratic process. It is also important to understand the political decisions that are made and the effect this has on our lives. As students, studying Politics offers so many transferable skills to areas of employment. Skills such as analysis, debate, synthesis and evaluation are what employers are looking for in our modern world. The fact that Politics is not a static subject also means that we always have up-to-date source material at our finger tips making it easy to bring this subject to life. What a fascinating time to be studying Politics at Marling. In just fifteen years, the UK has seen fourteen different Prime Ministers—meanwhile, the United States has had only four Presidents in the same period (including Donald Trump’s two non-consecutive terms). What does this say about political stability and public trust in our electoral systems? Has populism become the new political norm? Are our civil liberties under threat? Can a political party uphold its core ideology while grappling with overwhelming national debt? And have we reached a turning point in international cooperation and the authority of supranational institutions like the United Nations? CAREERS Students who study politics embark on careers in Government: Lobbyists, Campaign Managers, Politicians, and in other areas: Business Experts, Market Researchers, Law, Journalism and Project Management. Some go on to work in charitable organisations, international relations or for peace keeping forces.
