Course summary

COURSE CONTENT: · Component 1: Drama and Poetry Pre-1900 - Students are required to study one play by Shakespeare which will be assessed in Section 1 of this component. In addition, students are required to study one pre-1900 drama text and one pre-1900 poetry text which will both be assessed in Section 2. · Component 2: Comparative and Contextual Study - Students choose one topic and study at least two whole texts in their chosen topic area, at least one of which must be from the core set text list. Students are required to read widely and independently as well as demonstrate close reading skills in analysing unseen prose extracts. · Component 3 NEA: Literature Post-1900 – Students are required to study three literary texts, including one prose text, one poetry text and one drama text. The aim of this component is to encourage individual study, interest and enjoyment of modern literature and for learners to develop an appreciation of how writers shape meanings, an understanding of texts informed by an appreciation of different interpretations and an ability to explore connections across texts.

Entry requirements

English Lang 5 Maths 5 6 in English Literature with an enthusiasm for reading.

How you'll be assessed

Two examinations (June) and one internally assessed coursework portfolio. This course will suit those who enjoy wide reading and exploring the different contexts of texts.
