Course summary
Students will produce practical and critical contextual work in one or more areas including painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, installation, print making, and photography. Drawing is a compulsory element of the course. Students will need to generate and develop ideas, research work of other artists, record first-hand observations, experiment with media and processes, and review and refine ideas towards producing a personal and meaningful outcome. Year 12: In the first term of the course, students will learn new techniques and use new materials to explore a theme. Observational work will be a key aspect at the start of the course. As students develop their knowledge and range of skills, a greater level of independence will be required to explore themes in a more personal and unique way. They will devise their own theme for a Personal Investigation with guidance from their teacher. Year 13: In the autumn term of the course, students will first continue to develop their own Personal Investigation supported by a written essay. Guidance will be given in the form of tutorials and class critiques to enable students the opportunity to discuss and refine their ideas to produce a series of developed outcomes. In term 2, students will receive a selection of starting points from their exam board and will choose one to develop a final project, culminating in a practical exam.
