Course summary

In Film Studies you will explore how the moving image has maintained its position as one of the most significant cultural forms of the last century. You will cover a wide range of theories and concepts related to the study of film and its place in society. The course examines the language and structures of film along with its social and industrial contexts. At its heart the syllabus recognises our love of popular film and extends our experience of alternative cinema. Lessons are a balance of analysis, research and practical work. There is an emphasis on building skills and confidence in the induction phase, leading to whole-class discussion, group work and independent study. We personalise all coursework assignments and students choose the films and directors they write about. Film Studies is suitable for students wishing to enter the professional creative media world. It is also useful for those who wish to develop transferable skills of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection, which are essential for lifelong learning. The emphasis on visual storytelling particularly complements the study of Literature and Art. The course also provides a strong basis for undergraduate studies in Film Theory, Film Criticism and Film History, whilst covering practical filmmaking techniques suitable for vocational courses in this field.
