Course summary

This course helps students to understand the responsibilities of the Accountant and the impacts of their recommendations on the business and the wider environment. Students will build knowledge and understanding of key concepts, principles and techniques that they can apply to real-life scenarios, developing the ability to solve problems logically, analyse data methodically, make reasoned choices and communicate effectively. Accounting is split broadly into financial accounting and management accounting. Within financial accounting students will study: - • Double entry bookkeeping • Verification of accounting records • Preparation of sole trader accounts • Limited company accounts • Partnerships • Incomplete records Within management accounting students will study: - • Budgeting • Marginal costing decisions • Standard costing • Absorption costing • Capital investment There are also areas covering key aspects of accounting including: - • Ethics • Concepts • Interpretation of accounts You will be taught using a range of methods from textbooks to online materials and self-study to discover the accounting processes. Accounting can be useful for a wide range of careers in finance and management. You can apply to university, with most universities offering pure accounting degrees as well as combined Business Management and Finance courses. Employers recognise the importance of financial competency; for those wishing to enter the profession via an apprenticeship, this offers a pathway to start your professional qualifications.
