GCSE Science - Triple

Course summary

The Individual Sciences route—often called Triple Science—leads to three separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with additional content and greater depth in each subject. Both pathways include required practical work and rigorous exams, but Triple Science offers more specialised study for students who have a strong interest in science or are considering science related careers. Triple Science has 10 units of study per science. Please note that Triple Science is taken as an option subject with the additional hours being taught in option block time. Alongside the additional hours given the science students will study either Further Mathematics or Statistics. There is an opportunity to secure qualifications in those subjects but not a requirement. GCSE Biology gives students a detailed understanding of living organisms, life processes and the interactions that support life on Earth. Topics include cell biology, organisation of body systems, infection and response, bioenergetics, genetics and evolution, and ecology. GCSE Chemistry explores the composition of substances, chemical reactions and the principles that explain how materials behave. Students study atomic structure, bonding, quantitative chemistry, energy changes, rates of reaction, organic chemistry and chemical analysis, as well as chemistry in the atmosphere and the Earth’s resources. Regular practical work helps students build confidence in scientific methods and problem solving. GCSE Physics develops an understanding of the fundamental principles that govern the physical world. Key areas include energy, electricity, particle model of matter, atomic structure, forces, waves and magnetism. Students learn to analyse data, interpret scientific information and apply mathematical skills to explain physical phenomena.
