Course summary

Studying Music at Key Stage 4 extends the skills required of an all-round musician. Appraising music improves analytical skills, covering a wide range of styles and eras from Purcell to Queen, from Beethoven to Star Wars. The performance level in year 11 required for the top marks is equivalent to Grade 4 on any instrument or voice. Performing is not restricted by style or genre, all types of music are encouraged. Composing focuses on improving understanding of harmony, melody and rhythm in order to create original, successful pieces of music. Composition can be done via any suitable medium, Garageband, Sibelius, or any format allowed by the specification It could lead onto higher education music related courses that, along with further training, could result in employment in the music industry such as a film composer, professional musician, and sound technician. It will also provide students with the skills, understanding and knowledge to access employment in a multitude of other industries.
