Course summary
Economics is structured into four themes. You will build knowledge and understanding of core economic models and concepts in Themes 1 and 2, and then build on this and apply your knowledge to more complex concepts and models in Themes 3 and 4. You will need to apply your knowledge and understanding to both familiar and unfamiliar contexts in the assessments and demonstrate an awareness of current economic events and policies. It is possible for you to take an AS in this subject. Themes 1 and 3 focus on microeconomics. Dealing with issues surrounding: - • Supply and demand • Market failure • Government intervention • Market structures • Business objectives • The labour market Themes 2 and 4 focus on macroeconomics and students study: - • Aggregate demand • Economic growth/inflation/unemployment • Economic policy • Poverty and inequality • Globalisation • Growth and development • Financial markets A range of methods are used including formal teaching, group and individual work. Case studies and investigations will be used to develop understanding of both macro and micro economics in the context of today’s world. You will also be encouraged to investigate the economy and have a working knowledge of the current developments in the world of economics. Economics is a versatile subject that can help you in a number of careers. Not only could you find yourself working for big corporations, banks or the government but your qualification in economics could also be valuable support in a career like Marketing, Law, Journalism or Teaching.
