Environmental Science

Course summary

Environmental Science is the key subject for the future. This is an interdisciplinary science that has international relevance and is an ideal study pathway for anyone interested in contemporary environmental issues and sustainability. You will learn about the dynamic nature of the Earth and how the interconnected physical and biological systems function naturally, and the impacts that humans have on them. We consider the Living Environment with particular emphasis on conservation and develop our understanding of the Physical Environment through our studies of the Atmosphere, Lithosphere and Hydrosphere. Our studies lead us to investigate and critically evaluate advances in technology to produce energy, food and manage natural resources of the Earth more efficiently. You will be taught through a variety of methods including; lecture based lessons, research lessons, discussion based lessons, practical work and field work. We develop practical investigation skills as recommended by the Field Studies Council; and whilst some of this is completed on the extended school site or in the local area we also have visits off-site across the two years to complement specific topics of the course. We routinely visit Colchester Zoo, Sizewell B, RSPB Minsmere, SUEZ Energy from waste plant, and also to the newly established Martlesham Wilds Nature Reserve. Across the two years you will study 6 units of content with sustainability and research skills taught throughout. Environmental Science is complemented by Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Geography and allows you to gain essential scientific skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and creative thinking. Environmental Science is the perfect stepping stone to a future career in many related disciplines, naturally leading to degree courses in Ecology, Conservation, Wildlife Management, Environmental and Earth Sciences. It can also lead to related careers in agriculture, renewable energy, business and environmental engineering.
