Course summary

Physics is used to solve problems – health, environmental, social and technological. It’s about practical applications in the world around us but also involves concepts such as the origins of the universe and the smallest building blocks of the cosmos. You may wish to consider combining Physics with another Science or Maths course. The course we follow links all the theory to real world applications allowing us to see the relevance of what we are learning. Content delivered in year 12: 1. Practical Skills 2. Fundamental data analysis 3. Imaging, sensing, signalling, materials 4. Wave and quantum behaviour, mechanics Year 13 content: 5. Creating models, matter 6. Fields, fundamental particles. Theory introduced in lessons is applied and reinforced through questions and exam practice. Practicals are used to meet the requirements of the practical endorsement and evidence the theory developing skills needed in the final exams. Physics is especially helpful for jobs that involve designing things and developing new technologies, including robotics, renewable energies, computer science, communications, space exploration, sports and games technology. Physics can be used to gain entry to careers such as science, technology, law, commerce, mechanical, civil, aerospace and electrical engineering as well as architecture. Physics is useful in underpinning areas as diverse as the application of AI, machine learning and music technology. The skill set you develop can be applied in any field. As a Mathematical Science, Physics is useful in contributing towards specific requirements for university entry from Engineering and Computing to Medicine and Architecture. Many of our students have gained excellent higher level apprenticeship positions after leaving Sixth Form whilst some of their peers have gone on to study Physics at Oxford and Cambridge. A more versatile qualification would be hard to find. Remember Physics is best chosen in conjunction with Maths.
