Welcome to Oak Wood School
Our sixth form is an ambitious, supportive and academic environment that challenges students to be their best. We provide a curriculum which instils a passion for and deep understanding of students’ chosen subjects and develops their independence in preparation for university study. Our new dedicated sixth form building offers a university style experience. It the hub of sixth form activity and includes a sixth form library for private study, collaboration spaces for group work and a large social space with an outdoor garden.
Whilst focusing on academic achievement, we believe students are more than just a grade and we aim for them to leave Oak Wood as knowledgeable, respectful and active members of our society. Students engage in volunteering opportunities at local primary schools, local charities, hospitals, and in the lower school. The Student Leadership Team, including the Head Boy and Girl and a team of Senior Prefects, represent the school and act as role models, as well as helping to support and organise key events in the whole school calendar. We have a growing number of clubs and societies led by sixth form that are opportunities to develop leadership skills and tight-knit friendships.
Time in sixth form is short, and we know that we are a platform for students to launch their careers from. We pride ourselves on guiding our young adults through this complex and stressful period, helping them choose their own destination, then supporting them every step of the way until they reach it. We facilitate this through our Branch Out Lecture Programme, careers guidance, academic tutors and Higher Education visits. This is alongside the opportunity to work with student mentors who are currently completing apprenticeships and attending Russell Group Universities. We focus heavily on preparation for the wider world and make sure that our pupils are ready for the realities of independent living. For example, during their time with us the pupils will be given guidance on personal financial management, be made aware of the importance of looking after their health (both physical and mental) as well as learning some practical skills such as cooking simple meals.
Thank you for taking an interest in Oak Wood Sixth Form. I encourage you to read our prospectus and information brochure, which has details about the courses we offer for A level and vocational qualifications, and apply online for a place.
