Welcome Message

Students in the Sixth Form at Westfield stay with us for up to three years, according to their needs, and are based either in our Bungalow or our Sixth Form base in the Gould Building on the school site. We also have an office space at Dorset Council in Dorchester which we call Westfield@Work. These three sites make up the three distinct pathways we have for Sixth Form students.

With their compulsory education behind them, the very clear focus for our students is on life after school and how to achieve the ambitions they have for what lies ahead. The starting point for each student is absolutely the student themselves. What is it that they want to achieve from their time in our Sixth Form? What do they want it to lead on to? What does Westfield need to do in order to support them to achieve this? Below you will find information about the pathways that are offered in our Sixth Form.

Armed with this information, and after consultation with parents, an individual programme is put together that focuses on the key objectives the student has identified. Our students are usually clear sighted in targeting social development, increased independence, the further development of core skills, preparation for work (or other meaningful activities) and education for leisure as their main objectives for their time with us.

Enrichment Activities

Show all activities
At Westfield we see the curriculum as being every planned experience that our pupils undertake during their time with us. This includes much more than the traditional, taught curriculum. Staff take every opportunity to provide learning opportunities that are real for our pupils and that have meaning for them. This might be in the form of learning activities away from the school site or, perhaps, back at school working in our allotment.

Off-site activities

Learning that takes place away from the classroom is a very important part of the curriculum at Westfield. What better way could there be to learn about life in the Middle Ages than to visit an historic castle? Or where could you possibly find out more about yourself than when tackling the Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge on Dartmoor? Recognising the value of such off-site learning opportunities, staff at Westfield do everything they can to provide our pupils with a rich programme of activities that captures the imagination and provokes a genuine excitement for learning.

Outdoor education

Westfield’s Outdoor Education offers a wide range of locations and activities across our beautiful county of Dorset. We work closely with Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre (WOEC) as well as Lulworth Rangers in providing excellent learning experiences for all the pupils at the school. These experiences range from team building games, river crossing, indoor caving, nature walks and much more. The pupils also have the opportunity to take part in the Jubilee Challenge event which is run alongside the Ten Tors event based in Okehampton, Dartmoor each year.
