Welcome to Greig City Academy

The Sixth Form at Greig City Academy is a stimulating and structured environment for learning supported by teachers with strong subject knowledge. We offer a broad and varied curriculum in the Sixth Form including a range or AS and A Levels, Level 3 BTECs and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).Each year, the vast majority of students apply to and gain their first choice for admission to university and apprenticeships.Ofsted noted that “In the sixth form, pupils are well-supported in successfully applying for higher and further education.” Our well-established links with universities across the country will give you opportunities to learn more about the realities of higher education. University open days, Saturday schools, master classes and summer schools in subjects as varied as classics, medicine, psychology, law, performing arts, engineering and oceanography have helped our students decide on courses and prepared them for the application process. Work experience takes place at the end of Year 12 to give students the opportunity to develop their career choices and to apply their skills in real working conditions. We take pride in our sixth formers’ individual achievements and value the way they contribute enthusiastically to the school community – helping younger students with their learning, leading on the school’s work with charities, running enrichment activities and helping set high standards for younger students to emulate.

Enrichment Activities

Show all activities
We believe in offering a wide-range of extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities in order to broaden students’ skills and horizons. All Year 12 students undertake a sports related enrichment during Wednesday afternoons, ranging from football, ice skating to sailing. Our nationally recognised sailing academy is open to all. This sport can be undertaken from a one of experience, to international level Laser and Keelboat regattas around the UK and abroad. This often leads to outstanding job opportunities! Our thriving football team trains twice a week with a professional coach and is entered into the AOC league, Middlesex Cups and competes in one international tournament each season. Every Wednesday Sixth Form games includes options of Ice Skating, Basketball, Football, Gym and Rock Climbing. We offer an exciting annual trip to CERN for our Sixth Form students, providing a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge science. In 2024, we have taken organised two trips to CERN, in April 2024 and in November 2024 . During the visit, students take part in interactive workshops, enjoy a guided tour of CERN, and explore a nearby French city to broaden their cultural experience. Our next CERN trip is planned for September 2025 and promises to be another inspiring and educational experience. We are proud to support STEM learning through our VEX V5 Robotics programme at GCA, designed specifically for our Sixth Form students. In February 2025, we hosted a successful V5 event, and we plan to run two more competitions during the 2025–2026 academic year. These events provide valuable hands-on experience in engineering, coding, and teamwork. Our robotics teams have not only competed at the UK Nationals but have also qualified for the prestigious VEX World Championships, showcasing their talent on an international stage. For students studying A-Level History or Politics, we have the fantastic opportunity to visit the centre of power in the UK, the Houses of Parliament. Our students get the opportunity to receive a guided tour of the House of Commons and House of Lords, including the chance to sit in on Members of Parliament and Members of the House of Lords debating laws. Students also have the opportunity to visit the Supreme Court and Westminster Abbey. We also have a range of other opportunities – A-Level Politics students can apply for our local MP, Catherine West’s summer school which gives further insights into the inner workings of politics and History students can apply for a War Studies taster day at King’s College, London. Recently, all A Level Art students enjoyed a visit to Florence in Italy to experience the art and culture there.

FAQs

What time does the day start?

The school day starts at 8.30 with either assembly or registration.

What sports does GCA Sixth Form Offer?

We have well established football and basketball teams with professional coaches which regularly train and compete in national competitions. We also have a running club, sailing club and a dance academy.

What trips does the Sixth Form do?

The school trips at Greig City Academy are subsidised so that every student can do them. We offer residential field trips for Biology, Geography and BTEC Science. There is a Physics trip to CERN, sailing trips to Miami, Florida, Duke of Edinburgh trips around the UK and many more.

How many lessons will I have in a day?

This varies, depending on how many subjects you have chosen. Most students will have three or four lessons a day.

How many subjects do I have to study?

All students follow three courses - either A Levels or BTECs or a blend of the two. You can do four subjects, for example A Level Maths students often add Further Maths. In addition, all Year 12 students study for the Extended Project Qualification.

What are the facilities like?

The sixth form has a separate block which comprises of a reception area with comfy chairs, some computers and toilets. Off this is a garden area with lots of tables for sitting and working or socialising. On the first floor is a kitchen with a toaster, microwave, airfryer etc. On the top floor is a large study room with desks and networked computers. We also have laptops which students can borrow to use during the day.

Is the Sixth Form seperate to the main school?

The Sixth Form students have a dedicated block which has Sixth Form only study and recreational areas. The Sixth Form students choose to undertake many enrichment activities- leading main school sports teams, reading schemes and assisting on lower school trips.

What is the Extended Project Qualification?

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is an independent research project, usually completed alongside A levels It’s worth up to 28 UCAS points, roughly equivalent to half an A level, and can take the form of a 5,000-word dissertation or a practical project (such as an artwork, performance or design) accompanied by a shorter written report. What sets the EPQ apart is the freedom it offers. Students can explore any topic that genuinely interests them, often going beyond the scope of the school curriculum. That might be something related to a future degree or career path, or simply an area they’d like to explore in depth. More importantly, the EPQ is a chance to demonstrate qualities that universities value highly: intellectual curiosity, initiative, critical thinking and the ability to manage a substantial piece of independent work. It can make a real difference in competitive admissions processes, particularly for courses such as Medicine, Law or Engineering, and often becomes a valuable talking point in personal statements or interviews.

Do you offer Further Maths A Level?

Yes, we do.

Do you offer any GCSE resits?

Yes. Students who have not achieved a Grade 4 in English or Mathematics are expected to attend lessons and resit the GCSE in November and/or May of Year 12.

Do I have to stay in school all day?

All sixth formers are expected to be in school, either in lessons or studying independently until lunchtime. If you do not have alesson in the afternoon, you may go home and study though we do recommend staying in school to complete your work as there are fewer distractions than at home.

Is there a dress code?

Yes, there is. We expect students to wear formal 'business' attire - no trainers, jeans or track suits.
