Apprenticeship
From the classroom to the open ocean, former Shoreham Academy student Charlie Cullen is charting an extraordinary course. Charlie studied at Shoreham Academy between 2011 and 2018, before leaving sixth form to pursue an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering with a local company. While he thrived in the world of engineering, his heart was never far from the sea. Having grown up sailing and volunteering with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), Charlie had already developed the skills and determination that would later propel him into a professional maritime career. In 2024, Charlie took the bold step of turning his lifelong passion for sailing into a full-time career. His dedication quickly bore fruit: within just months of entering the industry, he was appointed First Mate in the world-famous Clipper Round the World Yacht Race — one of the most demanding endurance events on the planet. Working alongside Skipper Ella Hebron, Charlie will co-lead a diverse crew of amateur sailors aboard a 70-foot racing yacht. Together, they will face storms, swells, and extreme conditions as part of the 2025–26 race, a journey that will span 40,000 nautical miles, cross six oceans, and connect people across nearly every continent. The race begins on 31 August 2025 in Portsmouth, where a fleet of 10 identical yachts will set off on their epic circumnavigation. Over the following 11 months, crews will battle the wild Southern Ocean, the towering waves of the North Pacific, and the heat of the tropics — an experience that tests courage, resilience, and teamwork like no other.
