Welcome to The Becket School

I thank you for your interest in our school. The Becket Sixth is an outstanding sixth form, achieving the best results in the County (state schools) year on year and appears in The Times top 200 schools list each year.We are a caring and tolerant community in which staff and students work together. Well motivated students are welcomed and share a common aim with teachers: that of ensuring that these years are well spent and have a successful outcome. For many students the Sixth Form represents two short but very special years of their lives. It is a crucial time which can place considerable pressures on the student; it can also be a time to discover the true satisfaction of learning, a time to make new friends and to find new interests and pursuits. Our first aim is to enable our students to fulfil their academic potential. But while we emphasise the importance of academic achievement, we see this as only one aspect of the development of the whole person. For these reasons it is essential that the place of your choice should be one which holds out the best prospect for your academic success, but also one in which you will feel sufficiently happy and ‘at home’ to be able to work steadily towards your personal goals. Also a welcome from our Assistant Headteacher(in charge of Post 16)There is a strong emphasis on independent learning as a key aspect at this stage of their education. Our Post 16 facilities allow students to work independently in their study periods in a calm studious atmosphere. We also support them in Year 12 by providing them with a super Curricular programme that provides a structure for independent wider reading around their academic interests and specialisms.Alongside the A-Level qualifications students have the opportunity to study extra qualifications such as the Extended Project Qualification or Core Maths, both of which are worth UCAS points. We also provide an enrichment programme for our A-Level students, activities range from the Journalism group that lead on The Becket School Despatch publication, our very successful debate group and Young Enterprise group that run every year and many sports and music opportunities.Post 16 students are instrumental role models in the wider Becket School community with many taking the opportunity to mentor main school students in certain subjects or their reading and also perform as part of Drama, Music or other whole school events, encouraging and developing younger talents within the school. The Becket Sixth Leadership Team will always strive to support every student to be the best they can.

Music Opportunities
We have a lively and exciting Music Department at The Becket School with a wide variety of activities available to students in and out of the classroom. Students who play an instrument or sing are encouraged to join one or more of our ensembles, which rehearse weekly and perform regularly at our own school concerts and external functions. So if you want to sing a solo or maybe just play second triangle in the school band then we have a place for you! At The Becket School we are pleased to offer a wide range of musical tuition opportunities to all students within the school and within our feeder primaries so that there is continuity from key stage 2 to 3. Our instrumentalists and vocalists benefit from expert tuition provided by both our own peripatetic music teachers and the County Music Service across all the instrumental families. Every student has the chance to take up an instrument or singing lessons and get involved with the extra-curricular musical life of the school. This term we are also rehearsing for our musical Journey to the Forbidden Planet.
