Welcome to Rosewood Free School
We are a specialist school for young people aged 2 to 19 with profound and multiple disabilities, based in Lordshill, Southampton. At 16 most of our learners will join the Hub classes. The Hub also accepts post-16 school leavers from other special schools in the local area subject to availability of places. The Hub is currently made up of two classes of young people with PMLD and/ or SLD with a physical disability.
We work to ensure that a range of community based learning is offered to students in the Hub, and that they are maximising their skills and supporting the aim to reduce dependency on adult support.
All students at Rosewood are assessed using the ImPACTS assessment and teaching and learning opportunities are planned using the ImPACTS curriculum. As our students mature and approach their adult lives, we work with them and their families to target specific areas of need and to ensure that there are opportunities to allow personal interests to be developed and supported.
Specialist equipment and purpose built environments enable us to work with students in a safe and supportive way. For some of our students they will be given opportunities to use the Hydrotherapy pool and to access Rebound therapy.
Ofsted visited in October 2023 and rated Rosewood free School as Outstanding in all areas. Ofsted commented:
“Pupils experience a wide range of rich and stimulating learning activities. Preparing pupils for adulthood starts from day one. Encouraging pupils’ independence and ability to make choices is deeply embedded in the school”.
“Staff prepare pupils exceptionally well for adulthood. Pupils’ and families’ individual wishes are carefully considered and are reflected in personalised pathways. Staff support families extremely well, particularly at transition points.”

Enrichment Activities
Show all activitiesWe do encourage our older learners to participate in activities that help others and are also routine bound.
This is a really important aspect of the Hub and the Avenues curriculum and provides all learners with the opportunities to apply their skills in functional settings. It is also an important way to look at accessibility as an adult and to help promote inclusion in the wider society.
We are very aware that the notion of independence is not a realistic destination due to the complex health and physical needs of our learners so we look at how we reduce dependency and learn to control other adults. We do want all our learners to be as active in the day to day living tasks and promote active participation throughout the day. We also work with families to signpost potential alternatives to living at home.
