Welcome to Outwood Academy Newbold

Welcome to Outwood Academy Newbold Sixth Form. We are an ambitious Post-16 provider and trust that this website will provide you with a comprehensive overview of our curriculum, enrichment and the overall experience that we offer here at Outwood Academy Newbold.

As an inclusive sixth form provider our exceptional support, care and guidance ensures our learners progress onto their chosen post-18 destinations. We believe in life-long learning and want all of our students to leave us with a love of learning and desire to continually progress whether it be Oxbridge, university, an apprenticeship, college or education in employment. “Students First: Raising standards and transforming lives” really is at the heart of everything we do. Therefore, we not only focus on supporting our students in their academic studies but also developing them as individuals. We are as passionate about giving our students a positive life experience as we are in supporting them to gain the highest possible grades.

From Year 12 we offer many opportunities to broaden students’ experiences. For example, all students, as part of the extra‐curricular programme of opportunity will undertake work experience in order to support their career aspirations, and take part in a leadership programme within the academy to develop desirable skills for both the workplace and further education. We are knowledgeable about the local and national employment opportunities and ensure that all of our interventions leave students more suitable for career progression.

Sixth form students are the senior students within the academy and are viewed as role models to all younger students. They have additional rights and responsibilities that reflect their status including lead learner programmes, independent study and the student union. We constantly challenge our sixth form students academically and we expect our students to rise to these challenges, meet our high expectations and uphold our academy values. We have ambitions for the current sixth form students to be the mentors and guides for future students, a process that has started this year through using past students in our virtual prospectus.

We very much look forward to working with both internal and external students at the most crucial time of their education. Should you have any questions regarding our sixth form provision or you would like to arrange a visit to view our facilities then please do not hesitate to contact us at the academy.”

Ash Collins

September 2016

Employed

Upon leaving OAN Ash set about following a university pathway and then went into employment. Ash went to Sheffield Hallam University and then left after a year as he was unsure if he’d made the right decision or not subject wise. He is now studying at degree level with The Open University to get a degree that he feels suits him more. We are very proud of Ash as he is doing this alongside being deputy manager of a Wetherspoons pub!

Kira Barnett

September 2016

Employed

Kira chose the university route after leaving OAN. After leaving 6th form Kira went on to study an undergraduate degree, BA (Hons) Contemporary Theatre and Performance at the University of Derby which led to her gaining full time employment at Derby Theatre at the end of her three year degree. Kira is currently the Marketing Assistant at Derby Theatre, a role that she “loves” and has held for nearly two years since leaving university. Kira found her current career through completing voluntary work experience with the Marketing Team at Derby Theatre which led her to discovering a passion for the field. Her roles include; leading on marketing campaigns for both received and produced shows, managing the theatre’s social media accounts, mentoring university students on work experience and handling customer enquiries and collating show data on Box Office. Kira explains she “was attracted to the role as each day is different. Derby Theatre is a learning theatre which means there are many different strands to the role and this suits (her) personality as (she) loves to keep busy doing different tasks, (she’s) definitely never bored!”

Curtis Ledward

September 2018

Employed

Curtis chose the employment route when leaving OAN and took some time to ensure he knew what he wanted to do and gained experience in a variety of fields. Curtis now works at Vision Express in customer service. He really enjoys getting to know people on a consistent basis. Curtis explains: “It doesn’t sound that major but in a way, I get to help people change the way they look so they can feel better about themselves.

Enrichment Activities

Show all activities
Duke of Edinburgh

As an academy we have offered the Duke of Edinburgh Award for several years now. We have a number of students who are undertaking their gold award, but you can clearly start at any stage of the award. Bronze and silver award: you must complete four sections linked to: helping in the community or the environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning, training for and completing an expedition. For the gold award you must also work with a team on a residential activity. The DofE programme is open to anyone and the group includes students from our lower school too. The programme is an excellent way to set yourself new challenges, and to improve a variety of skills such as communication and resilience. It’s also something universities and employers really value as it highlights your commitment and determination.

Academic Enrichment

To develop and support subject study our Post 16 provides students with a wealth of opportunities that develop your study skills, broaden your academic thinking and support your academic study.

Sport Enrichment

The academy offers a variety of ways to get involved in sport either competitively, for pleasure or to keep fit and we have some excellent facilities that offer sixth form students different options.

Performance Enrichment

Post 16 students can showcase their talents and get involved in a rich calendar of performance related activities which play an important role in our academy’s vibrant arts culture. We encourage students to become involved.

Charity Work

Are you someone who gains satisfaction from helping others? If so there are lots of ways you can engage with the community and involve yourself in charitable activities. Our students are encouraged to raise awareness of causes and organise ways to raise funds for our agreed charities. It's an excellent opportunity to make a difference in the community, whilst gaining vital experience and increasing your employability skills for the future. We have a charity committee as part of our Student Union. Each year the committee decides on a charity that they would like to support; often this is a local charity that holds meaning for those particular year groups. The committee supports a variety of community events, as well as organising their own events. For example students have completed a sponsored hike in the past (dogs were welcome), discos for younger year groups, talent shows, bake sales, and so on. We encourage students to be creative in the ways that they can support these charities to really develop their skills too.
