Welcome Message
Welcome to
Matthew Arnold Sixth Form
Matthew Arnold School’s Sixth Form is an integral part of a very successful and popular 11-18 comprehensive school. We aim to provide all our students with the opportunity to realise their full academic potential while developing their interests and skills outside the classroom.
Sixth Form students have their own floor in N Block which has a dedicated study room and common room. Sixth Form students are encouraged to play an active part in the wider life of the school taking advantage of a broad range of enrichment activities including enrichment days, sport, music and drama. Students are also expected to contribute to the wider community through a Community Service programme and assuming roles of responsibility within the school.
OFSTED found that “Students in the sixth form provide high-quality student leadership with committees that work with the school. They run charity events to raise money for local and international causes. Students also focus on improving the environmental impact of the school. Sixth form students act as peer mentors to younger pupils, supporting them in school ".
We offer a comprehensive selection of A-Level subjects, from traditional courses such as Biology, Maths, English Literature and History through to newer subjects such as film studies and photography. Each subject is taught by experienced staff with an excellent record in A-Level success.
Applications for Sixth Form are welcomed from current Matthew Arnold Year 11 students as well as students from other schools.
We expect our students to have a positive attitude to study and to meet the school’s expectations. In return, we will provide a stimulating, mature and friendly environment in which students can thrive and contribute to the life of the whole school.
Tracey Oakden, Head of Sixth Form

Enrichment Activities
Show all activitiesWe offer the Bronze award to students in Year 9, the Silver award to Year 10 and the Gold to Year 12. Anyone in these years can take part and should look out for more information on the website or the weekly Student Bulletin in the new academic year.
There are opportunities for becoming part of MAPS (Matthew Arnold Peer Support team) and for coaching younger students.
Year 12 is an ideal time for undertaking to organise a variety of committees such as charity, environment, social and diversity committees. If students wish to set up a new committee can they discuss this with our Head of Sixth Form.
Head Prefects are elected from Year 12 during the Spring Term. Throughout the Sixth Form, we ask you to represent the school on occasions and to help with functions such as Open Days, Parents’ Evenings etc.
We run a dedicated group to provide information and support with applications to Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary studies. Students applying to these highly competitive courses are identified early and are invited to join this programme. This group meets regularly to discuss and share research and experiences as well as receive specific help with their personal statements and interviews.

FAQs
Students will need to have at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English Language and Mathematics at Level 4. To enable students to select the most appropriate subjects at A-Level we use a system based on their APS (average point score) from their GCSE results. Add together your 8 highest GCSE's and then divide by 8 to give your APS. We advise students to choose the subjects which best fit their APS. Please see subject information for subject APS.
The minimum requirement is for you to apply for 3 subjects at A-Level.
The requirement for you to able to apply to study 4 A-Level subjects is that your APS will be over 7.25. This will be agreed with the Head of Sixth Form in September.
Yes - this can be added to your application in September when you have made final decisions on your subject choices.
Students that have applied for Maths A-Level are able to apply for Further Maths.
Courses will only run if there is a sufficient demand for them. If a course attracts low numbers of applicants it may not run and we will contact you if this is the case.
We only block subjects once our application deadline has passed. This enables us to accommodate as many subject choice combinations as possible.
