University

I left Swanwick Hall Sixth Form in 2014 after studying English Literature, Health & Social Care and Psychology at A-Level. This allowed me to go and study a BSC in Speech Sciences at Marjon University in Plymouth. My dream has always been to become a speech and language therapist and studying at Swanwick Hall Sixth Form allowed to start the journey to achieving this dream. Once I graduated from Marjon I started working in supported living with adults with Autism and learning disabilities. This allowed me to gain further experience working with individuals with speech, language and swallowing problems. In 2019 I started a Master’s in speech and language therapy at Newcastle University. Due to the ongoing pandemic, I was unable to finish this and instead have just started working as a therapy assistant on an inpatient ward for adolescents who have mental health problems. Outside of work I enjoy reading and needlework and I’m hoping to go travelling through Greece. I also enjoy socialising with my friend and family and spending time with my pets.

Currently, I am a final year medical student with Keele University. All being well, next year when I am 23, I will graduate and go on to be a doctor in the NHS. I am hoping to continue my training and become a paediatrician. I have already achieved many things such as running national paediatric conferences, having blogs published by the Royal College of Paediatrics and getting a case report published in Midlands Medicine. I am very excited about what the future holds, having wanted to be a Dr from when I was 6 years old. I have done many exciting things since I left sixth form, including, visiting Africa with a charitable organisation, where we climbed Kilimanjaro. I did some hospital volunteering around Vietnam where I got to deliver a baby! I have also had an active roll in leading university societies and teaching other medical students. I have been employed by NCS as a team leader, by the NHS as a part time as a medical assistant where I take bloods from patients. I will also be working as a COVID-19 vaccinator this Summer. Outside of my academic and clinical studies I enjoy singing, baking, photography and running. I also have a fabulous bunch of friends and a boyfriend who I enjoy travelling with.

Sixth form was a brilliant time. Really enjoyed it and if I could go back and do it again (especially Y13), I would. I always felt supported there and I learnt a lot about working independently. I vastly improved my problem solving skills and mental resilience there too but I’d say that’s less specific to sixth form in general, and more specific to the subjects I studied (Maths & Physics). I enjoyed the problem solving aspects of these subjects (especially with regards to the Mechanics modules in both of them), I thought my best bet would be to study mechanical engineering which blends the two nicely. I knew that pure maths or pure physics would be too heavy on the theoretical side for my liking and hence why engineering made sense to me. I went to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham. Completed a year long placement at Jaguar Land Rover and went back to complete my masters (5 year sandwich course). Graduated with a First-Class Hons MEng. Thoroughly enjoyed it all. I’m currently back at Jaguar Land Rover on a graduate scheme which was offered to me after I completed my placement. I’m currently within manufacturing programme management on some of our new electric vehicles that will be coming out in the next couple years.

Enrichment Activities

Show all activities
Swanwick Hall Sixth Forms enrichment programme will enable you to widen your experience with a huge range of activities.

Ambition 16-18
Ambition is a free, two-year scheme for Year 12 students and is run by the University of Nottingham. It takes place online although there may be an opportunity to visit campus during the programme. The activities are designed to support progression and application to any university. Examples of past activities include subject taster sessions with university academics, Q&As with current students, information on how to choose a course and university, student finance and accommodation, and advice and guidance on university selection processes.
Extended Project Qualification
The EPQ is a research-based course and relies on students being able to motivate themselves to work independently. Students design a research question related to their interests, studies or future career ambitions. They then produce a report based on their research and present this to an audience of their peers and teachers. The EPQ is recognised by universities as helping to develop the skills required for university study. It is worth the equivalent of an AS qualification in terms of UCAS points. This option is available to students who achieve an average GCSE grade of 7 or above.
Geography Field Trip
This year’s Y12 students are heading off to Yorkshire to complete their fieldwork, but next year there may also be a wonderful trip to study the Geography of Iceland.
