Welcome to Strathmore School

Strathmore School is a happy, thriving, oversubscribed and growing special school for children and young people aged 4 -19 with severe and complex learning difficulties including those with an additional diagnosis of autism and/or physical/sensory disabilities. We are committed to supporting all of our learners to achieve and enjoy and be stimulated and challenged to fulfil their potential. Our well qualified and dedicated staff have high expectations of our learners, and we all have the highest expectations of ourselves. We are a forward-thinking school committed to investigating and providing learners with the most relevant and innovative learning opportunities and resources available. We re-located in 2016 to fabulous new purpose-built facilities that we share with inclusive-minded mainstream schools. We are located across 3 sites within Richmond - SRR Campus, Grey Court Campus, and Russell Campus. Our ‘small schools’ and small class sizes ensure that all learners benefit from a consistent and supportive approach from all staff, including therapists, and are given every opportunity to thrive and develop as individuals. Our constant focus is always on what will make the biggest impact for the individual learner. We understand how important choosing the right school is for your son or daughter, and we appreciate the trust parents place in us to care and support their children. We look forward to welcoming you to Strathmore and showing you how and what our learners access. We look forward to your involvement in the many opportunities there are for you to join in with your child’s learning at school as well as meeting class staff, therapists and other parents.

Enrichment Activities

Show all activities
Enrichment is key in supporting our pupils in becoming more independent, inclusive and individual. Independence is encouraged when learners work with their peers in lunchtime clubs and with student volunteers. Using local facilities allows our pupils to interact and become a part of the wider school and local community. Specialist Strategies ensure we can effectively create an environment in which pupils can explore their personalities and interests.

Independent Living Skills
This is an extension of the 'role play area'. Here learners work on gaining and generalising skills within a realistic setting such as a kitchen or a bedroom. This zone offers opportunities to develop independent living skills such as cooking, cleaning and personal hygiene. These may be modelled by an adult first and then scaffolded for learners to follow independently.
Role play (community)
For KS3+ the role play area can be changed based on creativity and role play ability of the learners. The role play area may change to a cafe, shop, library (common places they may visit or places of interest to the learners). The zone may stay the same across the whole year e.g. a 'shop' but the theme of the shop changes (toy shop, book shop, food shop) rather than the skill of the role play.
Experimenters
For our KS3+ learners, 'experimenters' is similar to exploration in KS2- but there may be more 'community/life skills' equipment available. This zone contains materials that are otherwise unavailable in the rest of the class. There may not be play shelves as the learners are encouraged to 'explore' independently and access some resources independently.
Reading and Leisure
This is a calm zone in the classroom where books, magazines, iPads and laptops are available to access at all times. Learners may ask for music or videos for leisure. Some learners may use iPads and laptops to research information to extend their knowledge.
