Welcome to The Link School

Welcome to The Link School - Sixth FormThe Link Sixth form is a happy, secure place to learn with many students often choosing to stay on after year 11. We also welcome students from other schools who meet our admission criteria.Student life in the Sixth Form is largely about the transition to adulthood. Students in the Sixth Form do not wear school uniform. They have their own learning and social spaces within the secondary school and are treated as young adults. As with the main school, students are taught in small classes and are supported by experienced professionals to facilitate students’ access to the curriculum and to ensure that their individual learning needs (such as language and communication) are met.A core academic curriculum is provided to all students in the Sixth Form which allows them to develop important skills for adulthood and employment. Students also continue to work towards achieving qualifications in Maths, English, Food Tech and ICT.Students are also encouraged to make choices in a new course; Community Work and Leisure (CWL). During CWL, students are off-site developing skills and experience whilst doing things they have chosen and enjoy. In addition, students continue with the Access Programme which includes social skills, social communication, employability skills, and independent living skills. Speech and language therapy is an integral part of our Sixth Form provision. Our students also have weekly access to a variety of vocational courses offered at Nescot, our local FE college partner.

Enrichment Activities

Show all activities
At The Link Sixth Form we are committed to creating opportunities for all our pupils that enrich their learning and social skills. We offer a diverse range of after-school and lunch clubs through which we make the most of our staff’s knowledge and expertise. Details of clubs on offer are sent out at the beginning of each term and have included gardening, IT and crafts. Often the Sixth Form students assist with running these clubs. Other enrichment activities have included cycling at the David Weir leisure centre and an enterprise event ‘Know your Onions’ in which the students grew vegetables and sold what they had grown in Croydon market.

Community Engagement
We are not only committed to making strong links within the school but we extend this ethos out into the local community. We frequently invite carefully selected organisations into the school to expand the children’s knowledge of their community for both social and educational benefit. Visitors have included the police, Keen-2-Go and Sutton support.
School Trips
We are also committed to providing out-of-school opportunities for our students. Educational visits enable us to take children’s learning to a higher level and provide them with experiences that help them to put skills and other learning into real life practical situations. This year sixth form students have visited the Science Museum and taken part in STEM workshops at Thorpe Park and a Shakespeare workshop at the Globe Theatre. All of the students have the opportunity to compete in regional sporting competitions regardless of their ability.
Work Experience
Work experience was conducted in school during the pandemic. Students could apply for a number of different roles including: assisting the site manager, working in the office, or supporting the therapy team creating resources. This proved successful and in the future students will continue to work in school to gain experience of different roles. In addition, we work with local employers to enable the students to spend at least 5 days undertaking work experience. This has previously included work as customer service assistants at Pets at Home and the Co-Op, gardening at Sears Park and catering assistants at independent cafés.
College
All Sixth Form students spend one day per week at Nescot College, a local FE provider. The vocational taster session are the same in content as those offered to full-time students at Nescot and include catering, animal care and construction. This provides a fantastic opportunity for students to experience college life, try out different courses, and develop independent skills such as travel-training and buying their own lunch.
