Course summary

If you have an interest in science or wish to pursue a scientific career then this is the course for you. Choosing to study for a BTEC National Level 3 Applied Science qualification is a great decision to make. Employers are looking for well-qualified people to work within the fields of science, medicine, technology, engineering, and maths and this course can act as a springboard for you. Year 12 ● Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science covers topics including cell biology, cell specialization, and tissue function and structure. - Chemistry covers atomic structure, structure, and bonding in applications in science and patterns in chemical behavior and reactivity. - Physics covers waves and how these are used in communication in the modern world, including the use of Bluetooth and mobile phones. ● Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques covers a range of techniques and learners will be introduced to quantitative laboratory techniques, calibration, chromatography, calorimetry, and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the chemical and life science industries. Year 13 ● Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills ● Unit 4: Students select an optional unit based on their skills and interests. Units include: ● Enzymes in action ● Diffusion of molecules ● Plants and their environment ● The energy content of fuels ● Electrical circuits

Entry requirements

At least five GCSE passes or equivalent in five different subjects. You need to be interested and enthusiastic about how science is used in the workplace and be able to work to deadlines. You will have a grade 5-5 or above in GCSE Combined Science or grade 5 in GCSE Physics, Biology or Chemistry, and grade 4 in GCSE Maths.

How you'll be assessed

The course comprises four units —58% of the course is externally examined, and the rest is coursework. ● Principles and Applications of Science is externally examined (2-hour exam). ● Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques is the chance for students to undertake a number of practical assignments marked internally. ● Unit 3 is an externally moderated exam consisting of a practical assessment followed by a written exam lasting 90 minutes.
